The Virgin Islands
We left St. Martin at 6:30pm on March 4th and sailed through the night to the British Virgin Islands (BVI).   It was 80 miles and 18 hours - a very tiring trip for all of us.   We saw a cruise ship and a couple of fishing boats during the night.   The weather was good and we didn't have any squalls.   Unfortunately we didn't get any fish this time.   Our first sight of land was Necker Island off the Eastern end of Virgin Gorda.   Virgin Gorda (fat virgin) was named by Columbus after he had been at sea too long!
Exclusive Necker Island - playground of the "rich and famous".   We saw 3 helicopters land in 20 minutes.   We couldn't make out the passengers, but it looked like Sharon Stone!
Hooray! The Langilles have arrived!   Mark, Kathy, Jason, Erika & Kristopher (aka Penguin) flew to the Virgin Islands and chartered a catamaran for the week.   We had a wonderful time sailing with them to Peter Island, The Baths on Virgin Gorda, George Dog Island Guana Island, and Cane Garden Bay.
Emma scouts for movie stars on Necker Island.
Jason seems to be happy to be on dry land!
Mark & Kathy at the Baths.
Emma and Erika had a great time catching up after 8 months apart.
Small world story - we met the Macdonalds family at the Baths on Virgin Gorda.   They were here on holiday from Montreal. It turns out mom was born and raised in New Liskeard!
Next stop was Cane Garden Bay where we met up with the Hancocks(Greg, Monique, Andrew and Madeline), the Hatchers(Dave, Sherry, Chris, Austin and Michael), and Chris Henning.
Gregg & Monique looking very relaxed.
Mark and Kathy took the entire gang (all 19 of us) for a day trip on Timeless Passage.   We sailed across to Green Cay and claimed the only palm tree on the island for own.   The kids snorkelled and built a fort.
Michael tried to make friends with this Brown Boobie. It bit him on the finger.   Aparently they don't like Doritos.
Dave, Sherry and Monique watching for dolphins on the way back.   We had two dolphins playing around the boat on the way over.   They seemed to be putting on a show for the kids!
Some minor repairs on the return trip.
The next day the boys went out on Carapan to do some fishing.   We caught this nice tuna off the east end of Jost Van Dyke.
There was enough for sashimi and more tuna steaks than we could eat!
Jason and Andrew check out the surf in Cane Garden Bay.
Kristopher talks to his new friend.
Back to school - Ben and Emma show off their bridges made of straws.
Chris Henning stayed on with us for a few days and we went up to Virgin Gorda to try some fly fishing on the flats.   We saw lots of Tarpon next to the bar at Saba Rock, but we only caught a few small jacks.
Swimming off Fiddler's Green after a day of sailing.
We met a family from Florida who have been living on a boat in Trellis Bay for 7 years.   They have two kids Emily who is 14 and Drew 11.   We had a great day sailing on a traditional wooden ship called Fiddler's Green.
Kelsey, Ben & Emma at the Pirate show.   Kelsey is expecting a little brother so the Acklands have sold their boat and headed back to Oregon.   We had a great evening with them at the Pirate Show on Marina Cay before they flew home.
Ben & Emma in the conch blowing contest.   Ben outdid all the adults and won a bottle of Pusser's Rum!   (We bought it off him).
Mr. Beans aka "the Pirate" at Marina Cay.
Ambro 1 won the Volvo Ocean Race last year beating 12 other boats around the world.   She was in Soper's Hole getting ready for the BVI race week.
Lisa and Kim enjoy "painkillers" on the Willie T at Norman Island.   They are really "pain postponers".   The next day we had some amazing snorkelling at the caves around the corner.   Norman Island is thought to be the inspiration for Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson.
John and Val from Eira (in the background) drop by for final goodbyes as we head off to St. Thomas and then to Peurto Rico.   They have been great friends over the past 8 months and we will miss sailing with them.   They plan to stay out another year before heading back to Maryland.
Next stop is Peurto Rico.   We headed off on March 29th and spent a night in St. Thomas before carrying on to Culebra in the Spanish Virgin Islands.
