Christmas Eve in St. Anne in Martinique. We sailed to Martinique on December 22 arriving in the dark after a very bumpy ride. We trolled the whole way from St. Lucia with some new lures that Steve on Walkabout recommended - but still no fish! St. Anne is a gorgeous little town on the south coast. It is very windy but good holding in the anchorage.
Christmas Eve Mass at the cathedral in St. Anne.
Fresh croissants and scoubidous chocolate at the pattisserie. Yum!
Hurray, Santa found us!
Boxing Day on the beach.
We saw this transport ship in Le Marin. It partially sinks allowing yachts to drive on - then refloats and carries them around the world to exotic places.
The statue of Napolean's wife Josephine in Fort-de-France. She was raised in Martinique. Her family owned a large plantation here. Vandals chopped the head off the statue in protest of her support of slavery.
Emma at the botanical gardens in Fort-de-France.
After Fort-de France we headed north to St.Pierre. This beautiful town was once called the "Paris of the Caribbean". It was completely destroyed when Mount Pelee erupted in 1902 killing 22,000 people. Ben and Emma are standing beside the cathedral bell that partially melted during the blast.
The sole survivor of the 1902 eruption was a prisoner in this cell. Cyprius was found 3 days after the eruption suffering from burns and dehydration. He went on to a career with the Barnum & Bailey Circus.
The sun rising over Mount Pelee as we head north to Dominica.
